Literal interpretation

So I had the Littles gathered on my bed while I read to them from the first chapter of James. We talked about trials producing perseverance. I asked them what came out of a tube of toothpaste when you squeezed it. “Toothpaste.” Yes, but what about a Christian, I continued. What happens when trials put pressure on them? When they are squeezed by circumstances? What comes out (or should come out)? My oldest suggested “Godly character.” The next one suggested “fruit of the spirit.” Then my 3-year-old bursts out with “Blood!”
